WHEN BEING STRONG IS THE ONLY CHOICE
The strongest are those who win battles we know little about. Indeed!
“ಫಣಿಯಮ್ಮ” (‘Phaniyamma’)
is a 1983 Kannada film that is based on the work of acclaimed novelist, MK
Indira. The drama portrays the struggle of a widow, a victim of prejudice in a sexist,
patriarchal social order. It earned abundant appreciation of critics and audiences
alike. It also won a legion of state and national awards.
High on courage, conviction and compassion, she
even defies behavioral norms imposed. In due course, she proves to be the
fulcrum within the family, thus blurring the line between Phaniyamma, the
victor; and, Phaniyamma, the victim.
Prema Karanth’s direction is
refreshingly nuanced. She narrates discerningly and forces you to
ruminate over retrograde practices in society. But, this flick on women
emancipation appears too plain and pedestrian on the technical front. The
visuals have an archaic effect and dilute the experiential
impact.
The
original music of BV Karanth, set to the lyrics of literary giant, Jnanpith
awardee Dr. Chandrashekhara Kambara, has a folklore-like feel and touch
to it.
LV Sharada’s portrayal of
the lead character is subtle ‘n skillful; she sensitively conveys the movie’s
significant message. Anant Nag has a cameo too. The rest of the cast,
consisting of Baby Prathima, Pratibha Kasaravalli, Archana Rao, Kasaragodu
Chinna, et al, lends able support.
The
film reminds us why Ernest Hemingway called ‘courage as grace under
pressure.’ Phaniyamma personifies that grace!
I rate
this socio-domestic drama: 8.0 on 10!
