MUCH ADO, COMICAL TOO, ABOUT LOVE AND WEDLOCK
The American actor, Ted Levine once said: “Good comedy is ageless”.
"ಗಣೇಶನ ಮದುವೇ" ('Gaṇeśana Maduve', meaning: 'Ganesha's Marriage') is a 1990 Kannada romantic comedy– an ageless, timeless classic. Based on Malladi Venkata Krishna Murthy's comedy novel 'Vinayaka Rao Pelli”, the film gave a big box-office bonanza for its makers.
The duo are in a love-hate relationship. Both Ganesha and Adilakshmi have mutual animosity at one existential level. But, in their anonymous, or rather, pseudonymous lives of YG Rao and Shruti, there is reciprocal attraction. The interest blossoms, courtesy: Ganesha's roommate, Shastri (Ramesh Bhat), who plays Cupid.
Eventually, love does enter the air when their true identities are revealed. But, not before they have taken you on a rickety, rollicking ride on screen.
Directed by HS Phani Ramachandra, the film is a fun-'n-frolic affair in toto. The dialogues of Rajachandur and screenplay of Kunigal Nagabhushan make the far-fetched plot seem plausible. The greats, Rajan-Nagendra have composed the music, which is melodious, but not among their most memorable. Technically though, the film is just about average and a bit too long!
Veteran actors, Anant Nag and Ramesh Bhat's comic timing is picture perfect. Vinaya Prasad is a fine foil to Anant Nag. The entire supporting ensemble cast– of Mukhyamantri Chandru, Shivaram, Vaishali Kasaravalli, et al– add to the comic impact.
“There is no such thing as fun for the whole family”, Jerry Seinfeld, the American king of comedy had stated rhetorically. But then, there is an exception to every rule, is it not?
I rate this film: 8.0 on 10!
