HEARTS LED TO LOVE AND MADE TO FALL IN
Physicist Albert Einstein was tongue in cheek when he declared, “gravitation cannot be held responsible for falling in love”. Indeed! But, “attraction” surely can be.
Well, "ಕಥೆಯೊಂದು ಶುರುವಾಗಿದೆ" ('Katheyondu Shuruvagide', meaning: 'A Story Has Started') is a 2018 critically-acclaimed Kannada film– a romantic comedy, to boot– that features a plot of two broken-hearted people falling in love.
Tarun (Diganth Manchale) is a boutique resort owner, who returned from the US to escape the mundane, robotic existence there. The inner calling, and the resultant leap of faith, led to the investment in the hospitality venture
But, his entrepreneurial journey is sputtering and stuttering along; keeping the resort afloat is a struggle. Online reviews of the resort have been negative; his driver is madly in love with the receptionist, who is on the verge of quitting. He has demons– of past failures and present challenges– to exorcise too. In short, Tarun's cup of woes is filled to the brim; and, so too the concomitant dose of dolor and despair in his life.
Amidst all this, Tanya (Pooja Devariya) checks into the resort. A newly wed, she is surprisingly solo on her honeymoon trip. And, she is grappling with a fair measure of personal issues too. The two strike a harmonious chord together and get into a platonic relationship. In due course, Tarun's feelings begin to blossom organically.
Now, are the emotions deep and strong enough to go beyond simple friendship and become something special? There are impediments too, courtesy: Tanya's secret... But hey, didn't someone say that you never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret?
Director Senna Hegde has taken the ingredients of romance; blended them up with passion; and, served an elegant story of love. The story-telling is neither formulaic nor hackneyed; the narrative unravels at its own slow, deliberate pace. Two other sub-plots in the film add spice to the drama and give bonus perspectives on love and life! He has masterfully strung together a series of sweet, but trivial moments to dish out a soulful, but philosophical fare on celluloid...and, a climax that is unusual, unconventional!
Both Diganth Manchale and Pooja Devariya excel; their onscreen chemistry is strong. The ensemble cast, in particular, Babu Hiriyannaiah, extends impeccable support. The rom-com scores high on technical merit too. Crisp, conversational dialogues complement the relaxed, but neatly orchestrated screenplay. The music is soulful and soothing; cinematography is good too.
Yet, the film lacks a certain surgical precision in the editing– the chink in the armour. Result: extra drag and tedium in the audio-visual experience. It is no doubt a film with fairy-tale freshnesss, which helps you to unwind in life and recharge batteries.
A little more attention to detail and finesse in execution...and, the film could well have been a 'Roman Holiday', or a 'Moonstruck' kind of evergreen, spellbinding classic!
I rate it: 7.5 on 10!
